Ryerson University

Ryerson is Canada's leader in innovative, career-focused education and a university clearly on the move. It is a distinctly urban university with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Ryerson has a mission to serve societal need and a long-standing commitment to engaging its community.

Our aim is to provide career-oriented education at a degree level which will ultimately lead to professional careers for men and women in all industries related to fashion. With a degree in fashion from Ryerson’s School of Fashion you will be prepared for a variety of careers in Fashion Communication and Fashion Design. The first year of the four-year program is common to all Fashion students. This foundation year is designed to give you a general overview of the knowledge and skills applicable to all branches of the fashion industry.

In addition, courses in liberal studies provide the broad foundation necessary for later specialization. In second year, you will begin a specialization in either: Fashion Communication or Fashion Design.

In the Fashion Communication stream, you will take business-related courses such as marketing, business, communication, fashion in international markets and fashion and society. These business courses are combined with professional studies in communication design, illustration, typography, curation and exhibition, photography, video production and fashion journalism to produce a graduate who can work in all areas of fashion communication.

Specialization in Fashion Design gives you the opportunity to take courses in intermediate and advanced apparel design, computer aided design, tailoring, production management, fashion and society, international marketing, grading and materials management. In addition, you may further focus on such subjects as contour and knitwear design, theatre/historical costume, surface (textile) design, and curation and exhibition through the selection of elective courses in second, third and fourth year.
